SINGAPORE: Chinese New Year in Singapore
With over 70% of its population being Chinese, Chinese New Year is much celebrated in Singapore. From as early as 15th Jan, Chinatown will be filled with lively festive activities like the Festive Street Bazaar with a dazzling array of festive delicacies such as waxed duck, barbecued sweet meats, cookies, as well as a myraid of fresh flowers and traditional decorations. The Street Light-Up along the main streets with its colourful decorations and greetings to welcome the Year of the Rabbit in 2011.
Another event – the River Hongbao 2011 taking place at The Float @ Marina Bay from 01-13Feb. not to be missed. Be captivated by a magnificent display of lanterns and take part in cultural activities. Performance by local and foreign groups will also get everyone in the spirit for a joyous celebration ushering in the Year of the Rabbit.
The other highlight – Chingay Parade held on 11 Feb and 12 Feb. It is a massive street parade, boasting a stunning array of dancers, street floats, lion and dragon dancers, among others. Staged at the Pit Building against the backdrop of the Marina Bay, expect a fiery opening with Singapore’s first pair of 88-metre long dragons-in-the-sky from Xi-An, China and a dragon entwined with firecrackers. Also, be sure to watch Singapore’s iconic attractions on the move as the Singapore Flyer, Resorts World Sentosa and Wildlife Reserves each stage their own float and performances.
The parade will close with a spectacular scene of over 10,000 lamps raised by performers and the audience against the night skies. Chingay 2011 will also present one of the most happening parties of the year after the parade – City Alive!, Singapore’s Biggest Street Dance Party. The Pit Building track will be transformed into an outdoor dance floor for 8,000 revellers, with special appearances by international DJs and electrifying performances.
