  INDONESIA: The Nirvana Batik Course

Batik painting is a technique where dyes of different colours are applied in beautiful and intricate designs to cloth, usually cotton or silk, by applying wax in various stages to produce a hand-dyed cloth of varied designs in vibrant colours. This art had its origins in China, India and Japan and was introduced to Java in Indonesia in the last millennium. Buaya Travel is offering a course in Batik Printing with a well-known Indonesian painter, I Nyoman Suradnya, in his home, Nirvana, in the center of Ubud, Bali.

Nyoman is an artist in three main mediums - batik, oil and water colour. His works record various aspects of daily life in Bali –from home scenes to activities in markets, temples and villages. He was the artist-in-residence at Bondi Pavilion in Sydney and Toorak College in Melbourne. He also lectured at John Kennedy Hall in Guam University on “The Connection Between Art, Religion, Traditional and Culture in Modern Balinese Society”. Nyoman’s works have been exhibited extensively in Bali, Australia, Italy, Guam, Japan, Singapore and Switzerland.

The Batik Printing course offers a choice of basic to advanced levels, and the duration ranges from one to five days, depending on preference. Apart from learning the “secret” behind the art of batik printing students also get a chance to see first hand how Nyoman works and learn from his expertise.
